Cannot Create Factory Recovery Media

I have an XPS 8700 running Win 7 Pro & am unable to create a factory recovery media on a USB external drive.  It is difficult to get Dell Backup & Recovery to recognize the drive.  But, even when it does recognize the drive, it starts running initialize & then gives the error that a different media must be used.  The drive in question is a 2TB Western Digital My Passport.  I have read several threads with the same sort of issue but have not found a resolution. I am running the latest version of Backup & Recovery.

Hi everyone,

I have got my Dell Latitude E5530 since 2012 with window 7 professional. After 5 years the laptop becomes slow so I would like to format it and reinstall the same operating system. I also would like to change the HDD to SSD. Could you please advise how to keep this genuine window 7 and reinstall it into my new SSD?

Thank you very much for your help!

Intel z87 Chipset Driver Update

The Dell update utility lists an update for the Intel z87 chipset driver for my XPS 8700 as recommended. I checked my motherboard specs & it also lists the Intel z87 as being installed on my system.  However, my processor,  I-5 4460, is not on the list of supported processors for this chipset on the Intel site.  My IDE controller is the Intel 8series/C220. . . How can I be certain that this update applies to my specific 8700 configuration?

Create Win 7 Pro Installation Disk

I am trying to create a Win 7 pro installation disk for an XPS 8700, i5-4460, running Win 7 pro 64 bit, but it came with an anytime upgrade to Win 8.1 & an 8.1 installation disk.  The Bios is Dell A11 & the Simbios is version 2.7.  The F2 boot configuration shows Legacy boot enabled, Secure boot disabled, & Oproms enabled.  I have read the FAQ on this subject, but am a bit confused. I downloaded the Win 7 Pro 64 bit iso using the iso downloader & am now trying to create the bootable iso using Rufus.  Is it OK to enable UEFI boot on this system?  What partition scheme & target system type should I use to create the bootable iso?

FAQ Link Cannot be Selected

The FAQ link "Install, create recovery media and restore using recovery media" on this forum cannot be selected for Win 7 because it does not have its' own bullet dot.  It is under the previous FAQ's bullet dot so selecting it always results in activating the link right above it.  Can someone please fix this as I need the info from this FAQ?

PROBLEM: dell inspiron 1545 black screen With cursor

Hello I've been having an issue with my dell inspiron 1545.. It won't let me go into any safe modes, they all have the same black screens with a cursor on it I ran the  diagnostics and it looked like everything passed and it didn't give me any kind of error code. I recently bought an external hard drive to try to get my files from the emergency file and backup options and it shows that I have about 150gb of files then when I try to transfer them I get a pop up error screen that says "restore7.exe  Application error" I've lost my boot disks and the main thing I care about is the files themselves since its already a pretty old computer any ideas on how to get into my files?

After upgrading to "A16" the bios no longer knew how to make my fans spin. the hardware was just fine and i could operate them with programs like hwmoniter and speedfans. but they did not operate with the battery options or at all. i solved the issue by downgrading to A15 bios. will this problem be solved anytime soon? do i have any security risks by having and older bios?

Dell Knowledge Base articles keep trying to download swf files that won't open...

I'm trying to fix some blue screen of death errors in my Latitude Windows 7 laptop (could just be old hardware), and on the Dell Knowledge Base articles, they keep prompting to download different swf files (depending on which page I'm on), and I trust them because they're coming from dell.com, but when opening them they just give an error that there's no program to run them... this is in Chrome by the way.

Examples:

  1. "How to Run the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics Utility" prompts to download the '32bit_diag.swf' file:
  2. "Microsoft Windows 7 Crashes, Restarts or a Blue Screen Appears" prompts to download the 'windebugtool.swf' file:

(Sorry if the links are showing giant generic-looking pictures, that's the Dell forum's auto-formatter or something)

I'm not sure why Dell's prompting to download these files or what I'm supposed to do with them. My laptop's Windows 7 factory reinstall is several years old (and the laptop itself is several years older), so I may have uninstalled some pre-installed Dell software that already knows how to run these files, but I'm not sure what those would be anyways.

Identification of Dell Recovery Media

Okay, it's dumb question time.... [:D]

I'm going through a load of unlabeled USB drives of varying sizes, from 8GB upwards. Several of them appear to be Dell OS Recovery drives that I've created at some point, and then stupidly not labeled. I'm sure I meant to label them, I just got distracted in the moment before I managed to.

The problem is, I've got a number of different Dell systems. There's a Precision M4600, a Precision 5510, an Inspiron Mini 3010, a Venue 11 Pro (7140), and a now dead Venue 8.

How do I know which computer the recovery media I have in my hand is for? Frankly, how do I work out which version of Windows is on it easily?

I know it's not going to be the M4600 - I never created media for that, and it's unlikely to be the 5510 as I actually bought USB media for that when I bought the laptop, and that's nicely labeled. So... is it for the Inspiron Mini, or one of the two Venues, or is it even older than that, from one of the many, many Dells or Alienware systems I've had over the last few years?

I really wish there was a nice .txt file or .inf file that I could just look in and see, but I can't find anything like that for the life of me [:^)]

So... anyone got any bright ideas?

Here's the root directory of one of the drives...

...then digging in a little...

...and then a little deeper still...

...but none of the XML files, batch files, or registry update files seem to have anything other than an OEMID set, originally enough, to Dell.

I'm open to any bright ideas (or even not so bright ideas [;)])

Unable to access directory Y:\Lotus\Notes\ Data using the configuration file With:\Programs file\lotus\notes\ notes. ini. The problem is just a server error or file as it is damaged, there is no connection to drive Y?

Windows 7 On a New Machine?

$

I need to buy my grandmother a new PC as her old Dell desktop died. I don't think she can mentally handle upgrading to Win 10 from Windows 7 which she uses now. First, will Dell still ship a desktop with Win 7? I'm a Mac user myself so I don't really know if Win 10 will offer her any real advantages but I do know enough to know that the two work and look differently enough that she'll be hopelessly confused.

Would it be better to get her a Win 10 unit and a tutor, or just buy a Win 10 desktop (if Dell won't sell a Win 7) and buy a Win 7 DVD and do a fresh install and remove Win 10. Monetarily, it will be much cheaper to go the Win 7 route but if she's really missing out on a hyper-improved OS with Win 10, perhaps it's worth it? No surprise, she basically just uses email and browses the web. No gaming for grandma! Anyone have any feeling on this?

I recently replaced the hard drive in a Dell Latitude E6420.  Loaded Windows 7.  Went to reinstall device drivers and I get a message that reads, "Setup is unable to recognize this computer as a Dell c omputer and will now exit."  This is coming up when I install the Dell Dimension ResourceCD.
