Just had a new Optiplex 5040 repaired with new HD and motherboard. HD was blank with no factory image installed. When using the Dell OS recovery and restore usb key it loads into the recovery and restore screen then a popup says to pull the key, turn off computer, put key back in then restart. This is a constant loop and never gets to the reinstal os screen. Any suggestions?

I recently installed a new Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200 rpm HDD with a new, clean install of the OS. SP1 and all drivers and updates installed smoothly. The Machine is working well. Only problem: If I am working and leave the machine for a time (let's say an hour), when I return the display has reverted to the blue user login screen. It is NOT in sleep mode. All processes have continued working in the background. Even ongoing downloads don't pause. It's as if nothing changed, but I have to login to get back my user screen. As soon as I do, it's as if nothing has changed and no data is lost, but it's annoying and weird. I have the power settings as follows: On battery = default settings. Plugged in and charging = all settings on "Never", which means that when it's plugged in the screen should not be changing, but it does. Can anyone tell me what I have set to cause this and how I can remedy it? Thank you.
First of all, please accept my apology if this question is not posted in the correct spot. It is as close as I could find. I need to download software from the My Dell Downloads site and burn them to a disc with a computer other that the dead one that the software is for. The problem is that I cannot find a way around the automatic registration. I need to be able to enter the service tag manually to get the correct software. How is it that I can burn the software with the wrong computer so that it can be installed in the correct computer? Thank you.

I would like to dual boot windows 7 and 8 or factory reset my laptop to original (windows 7), settings. it came with windows 7 and I upgraded it to 8 then 8.1. I don't have the original disks. I bought it second hand and the warranty has expired. I do have the original windows 8 with the key but I want windows 7 back.
attempting to dual boot is failing because dell auto detect will not let me download windows 7 drivers needed to operate all my components again.
I had to re-install alien respawn and found the original dated back up but it is grayed out. did the windows 8 upgrade delete the recovery partition?
can i create a new partition for dual boot that is compatible with windows 8 or can I get a rescue disk to restore it back to factory settings and can I get the drivers needed without dell system auto detect?
I am trying to do this without spending money or spending hours on the phone with support.
my Dell XPS 17 L702X cannot find my camera - webcam.
i have updated all recommended device drivers (there were no urgent ones to update). i did not update the optional ones. i installed R277344.exe the Quanta H.264 Integrate Webcam Driver, although i cannot see it in my 'device manager' under control panel. i used the Dell System Detect and installed all the drivers it recommended.
then, i used the 'do it myself' tab and checked camera and keep getting a message that it cannot find my camera.

I had some sort of error message saying windows 7 needed to be backed up. My laptop came with Windows 8 and I upgraded to 10 when it came out for free. I closed out of all the screens and turned off the laptop. It updated and then turned off. I just tried to turn it back on and all I get is the main screen with "dell" on it with the spinning circle. Any help will be greatly appreciated as all my college work and tons of my pictures that can'take be replaced are on here.
I did not let it do anything on the screen with Windows 7 stuff on it.
I own dell latitude e6410 and had its bttery replaced bout 4 months ago. the battery did good giving me 4 hrs backup (9 cell). now whe i hover above the battery icon in the taskbar it says 0% available plugged in charging.................but not actually charging i've tried the power button thingy and uninstalling and re installing the battery driver, didn't work for me. what should i do??
I have 2 dell laptps, (an E1705 and an 9400) and have the oem windows xp that came with them. But Microsoft is now doing away with XP and will no longer support it. I cant even upgrade Internet Explorer and am warned how old my version is even logging onto here. Does dell offer us at least a free upgrade to windows 7??? Or after spending a LOT of money ony my computers, do I have to now purchase a new operating system as well? Thank you for any help you can offer!!!
I purchased a new Dell Inspiron 3459 i5 processor with Windows 10. The computer works fine for about 30-60 minutes, then begins to lag for about 5-10 seconds every 3 to four minutes. For example, when I am typing, the computer will stall and I will not be able to type for a few seconds, then the computer will come back, often with what I typed while in suspension appearing on the screen. I have done all of the troubleshooting and no errors have been found. Same happens while using the internet with EDGE. The screen will hang with the circle then come back in a few seconds.
While not a big problem it is particularly annoying. I can reboot, and have another 30-60 minutes on no lagging, but after spending so much on a new computer, this should not be happening. I would welcome any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how I can fix it.
I also receive fairly frequent message that the Display Driver has stopped and recovered. Not sure if this is related.

PC came with Win 7 pre-installed and a Win 8.1 disk. How can pc be reset back to Win 7 factory setting? If possible it would be great to also preserve user data ie drive is not formatted or wiped out.

Hi, I got a generic HDD caddy from eBay for installing a 2nd hard disk in the DVD drive bay.
I ended up replacing the internal HDD with a SSD, did a clean install of Win7 on the SSD, installed required drivers, booted up and and checked that everything was fine. Great.
I then installed the original internal HD in the HDD caddy from eBay, booted up and checked that everything was fine. SUPER Great!
I was enjoying the much faster Vostro. Alas it was short lived. The laptop went to sleep mode (as configured) but would not awake from sleep. I had to hold down the power button to power it down and restart Win7.
Had a look at Device Manager and found a couple of unknown devices. To cut a long story short, I compared the drivers I had in the original system with those in the clean install on the SSD and installed any missing drivers (there were 3 or 4 missing). Re-booted and checked Device Manager and no more unknown devices. However the problem remained. The system wouldn't wake from Sleep and while restarting I also found that the not powering down problem also affected Win7 shutdowns and restarts. Windows appeared to shut down normally (the screen would go blank) however the power button would remain lit. I left it for 1/2 to 1 hour to see if it would eventually power down. No luck, after a while the fan turned on continuously. The only way to power down was holding down the power key.
As a last test I removed the HDD caddy from the DVD bay completely and rebooted the system so it was only running on the internal SSD. Checked and the system now wakes from sleep and do normal shutdowns/restarts.
Not sure what else I could check at this stage. Would appreciate ideas from anyone who's had experience with HDD caddies. TIA.
Some years back I bought two Dells with Windows 7 Home Edition and MS-Office 2010 Professional pre-installed. As I later bought several others with win7 Pro, I recently upgraded the two old ones to win7 Pro as well. No problems so far, but how do I get my MS-Office 2010 Professional back?
From one machine I had retrieved the MS product key beforehand; I downloaded MS-Ofice Pro and tried the key but it was not accepted. So I guess a 'special retail version' was used? How do I get it?
I am having a problem with one of my pieces of software. All of a sudden the icon is grayed out and it will not launch. I tried removing/reinstalling it and it says that .net 4 is not found. When I went to Microsoft they say that .net 4 is part of the Win 10 OS and is there. The lost software says it works on Windows 8.1 I am wondering if a pc restore could be used to "migrate" back to Windows 8.1 as PC was shipped with? I believe the computer is an Insperion 4837. I am willing to reinstall all of my app software if I can get the computer running properly. Any assistance would be most appreciated.
