Vostro 200 can't find disk drivers

Hi there.

I have a 500GB disk on my Dell Vostro 200, but then I tried to install Windows XP Home Edition and now when I try to boot, it comes up 'FreeDOS' and then does nothing after that, and when I put in my Windows Vista installation disk (my PC came with Vista) it says that no disk drivers can be found and I have to select a driver from my installation media. I tried using diskpart but the partitions \ volumes aren't coming up in the list. I haven't got the original installation media, since a friend gave me this old computer.

Thank you.

New app installation

When I try to install a new app, the system goes through the download and install steps but the shows the app as unavailable or the app icon just directs me back to the download screen. Is there anything else I need to do to use an app besides download and install? The app shows up on the list of apps from the start menu but not on the list from the settings-uninstall page.

XPS 8300-Clean install of Windows on a new SSD

Hello.

I am refurbishing a Dell XPS 8300, Core i7, Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit. I have the Dell OS install disk.

Will NOT be installing RAID array.

Re: the Intel RST and HECI drivers:

This system will not be getting a RAID. I would still like to install the IRST drivers. Not sure about the HECI driver.

Should I install both?

Do I NEED either?

If I want the IRST, do I need to F6 the RAID driver during OS install or can I install IRST after OS install?

Same questions for the HECI driver (basically).

Also, should I be using the Dell-supplied IRST driver (2013) or should I go with the most recent IRST from the Intel site? (Same question can be asked about the Intel Chipset Software Inst. Utility)

Edit:

I just checked the machine I built one year ago (ASUS, Skylake, Z170) and it has both the IRST and Intel Management Engine components. They must have been on the mobo drivers disk, but I have no recollection of doing an F6 RAID driver install during OS install. I don't remember installing the IRST either but I did do it. I must be getting too old.

Edit #2:

Hmm, my 2010 Toshiba laptop also has the IRST and IMEC installed. Never noticed before.

Trying to reinstall windows 10 onto laptop that won't boot

Hi

I am having trouble with my laptop it's recently stopped working it's quite old. The issue was every time I tried to turn it on it just went to the boot menu without me pressing anything and when i tried to boot it just didn't do anything and went back to the boot menu.

I then created a USB to install Windows 10 to try and fix it, bt I haven't had much luck with it. I tried to follow the steps on this guide

www.dell.com/.../EN

The guide told me to go to trouble shoot, advanced options, command prompt and write in a bunch of commands. However when I got to the end to rebuild the BCD store it just didn't work and it didn't tell me why.

I then tried to restart and do the repair option in the troubleshoot menu and ever since it has been going to this blue screen that just says:

Recovery

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired

The Boot Configuration Data file doesn't contain the valid information for an operating system.

File:\BootBCD

Error code: 0x0000098

You'll need to use recovery tools if you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.

And now it doesn't matter what I do it keeps going back to this screen!!

I've tried restarting the computer and it keeps going back to the screen. I've tried going to the boot menu and booting from the USB and it goes back to this screen. I changed the order in setup to make it boot from the USB before anything else and it keeps going back to this screen. I really don't know what to do now im just frustrated =.= does anybody please know what I can do?

Can I use Windows 8.1 in a VM environment ?

0

Purchased a Dell laptop over a year ago. It came with Windows 8.1, but as I use Linux/Kubuntu, I wiped the disk and did a fresh install of Kubuntu. Later on, I purchased, from Dell, the Windows 8.1 , and my understanding is that this OS is OEM.

Now I need to use Windows for data logs. Am contemplating using Oracle VM Virtual Box (  see https://www.virtualbox.org/ ).

Then Windows 8.1 can run from with the VM, with Kubuntu as the host. Can I legally use the Windows 8.1 in a VM environment ?

Bricked Inspiron 3043. No help from Dell Support

Hard drive crashed.  Re-install of same OS version (8.1 Home) will not activate.  After re-install we get "you do not have a valid activation code... please purchase a Windows license from the Microsoft store".  OS re-install doesn't read UEFI Product Key.

We have spent hours on the phone with Dell support with no resolution.  One support rep says "you can re-install from MS downloaded installation media" (as Microsoft also says).  When we try, Windows doesn't activate.  Next rep says "only OEM Dell recovery media will allow Windows activation".  Fine, but Dell refuses to ship installation media to us, so who knows?  In any case, a barely 14mo old  Inspiron 3043 is useless at this point.

Our company has stopped purchasing or supporting Dell products due to this and other recent problems with Dell.  Does any Dell rep care?  None of the four we have spoken to on the phone have been any help at all.

Hello!!!!
I bought your laptop DELL Instiron 7737. The purchase was make 12/23/2013.
Until now there were no problems and did not attach any importance to some small things.
The thing is that with your computer did not have the Windows installation disc.
Moreover, nowhere specified key for Windows.
For this reason, I can not activate the system after recovery.
What do I do in this setuatsii: buy a new license or have another way out full of?

Best regards

Inspiron 5759: Failed BIOS Update, No UEFI, No Dell Recovery

0

I'm new to UEFI and after a failed BIOS update, I removed and completely reformatted the HDD on another machine, wiping out the UEFI partition. So now I cannot load Dell Recovery to re-flash/repair the BIOS.

I have completed all the steps for notebook computers as suggested on Dell Support here: BIOS Recovery 2 options on a Dell PC or Tablet (http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/4/SLN300716/en)

I formatted a bootable external USB key with a copy of the BIOS package properly renamed as instructed. However, when I use the CTRL + Esc key combination and power up the computer, the system does not boot to Dell Recovery, but instead the power LED flashes a 3,3 code (3 amber flashes, 3 white flashes) which indicates "Recovery Image Not Found" according to the Dell Knowledge Base. I presume this code is given because it cannot find the Dell Recovery application since it (as well as the entire UEFI partition) is now gone after I reformatted the HDD.

So, I know what the problem is, I just don't know what to do at this point to fix it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Vista Home Premium Key

I have a Dell XPS 420 that I use from time to time.

A few months ago I booted it up and got a message that the KEY was out of date (ran out)

and I would like to know how to get a new one.

I have a reinstall disk that came with the computer when I bought it new from Dell. There is a key number on it .At least I think its the key.

Can I  reinstall Vista and use this key to get my system back up and working?

If so are there any problems I should look for?

If not, how do I get a new key for the one that's already installed?

This guide will work for all Windows 7 OEM Licenses (including non-Dell) and all Windows 7 Retail Licenses.

OptiPlex 3020: Windows 7 Clean Install - Failed Activation

0
0

I've been given a computer in the following state:

- Hard drive was reformatted with a clean install of Windows 7 Pro (same as shipped) which is now showing as not activated.

- I was told that an OEM disc was used to reinstall Windows but it looks like a retail version might have been used instead along with what appears to be a generic key.

- I do not have recovery media and I don't see a COA label on this model.

The computer all original parts and it's my understanding that the activation key is BIOS based. Is there way to activate Windows on the spot without tracking down recovery media, backing everything up, and then reinstalling?

I apologize if I've missed any critical information. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
