Unable to boot into windows after installing Ubuntu on partition

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my Windows 10 laptop,  I am able to boot into Ubuntu and it runs normally, but if I try boot into windows I get this message: selected boot device failed, press any key to reboot the system.

I think I messed up during the partition process, I had already installed Ubuntu but wanted a fresh install. During the install process I just selected the option to install over my current Ubuntu installation and didn't manually set any partition settings.

Please advise!

BLOCKED??? Window 7 Home Premium OS on a Dell Inspirion 660s

I just got done chatting with MS tech support. I have been having a problem with having dialog boxes pop up advising that I am running a "counterfeit copy of Windows 7". Also, when I run a simple validation process, it identifies it as an Invalid Microsoft Program Operating System. My Windows Update feature has also quit working and indicates that the Windows Update has NEVER been used (I have had this computer - and it has worked fine up until now - and regularly had Windows Updates done (they were set up to Update automatically, but I would also periodically check it Manually).

I talked to MS tonight, and they advised me - after doing some Remote Session checking around - that mu Activation Key Code that I gave them WAS correct and good, but that it had its activation BLOCKED... by the manufacturer (that being Dell).

Has anyone heard of such a thing? Why would Dell do that? How to I get it "unblocked"?

In lieu of Dell doing that "unblocking", MS says that I have to buy ANOTHER Activation Key (just a set of numbers) for $40!!! -- and still couldn't tell me if Dell's program could turn around and block that one also!!!

After a site I go to frequently did some software changes I have been unable to log in. Their order page continues to accept my log in and password, however.

The error message I get is:

"This page must be viewed over a secure channel. The page you are trying to access is secured by a SSL"  HTTP error 403.4

Are there some adjustments I can make in settings to fix this problem? As always, thanks for your help and hopefully I have put this in the proper sub-forum

Back up & Recovery System has not worked

Service at Dell is much worse than a joke...They have no regard for their customers. The following is a taste of my experience today:

The level of incompetency at Dell is STAGERING!!!!

This is the USUAL INCOMPETENT reaction I have come to expect from DELL!!!!
Their Back up & Recovery System has not worked for me (ever), and when my computer (an XPS 8700) was still in Warranty, their tech, Jonel (in India, 12-29-2014) could not handle a fix for it...General Incompetency...So, I have never been able to make a backup or recovery discs. Dell will NOT take responsibility for their POOR products or the incompetency of their staff!!!  I just spent 45 minutes and was transferred 4 or 5 times from the Philippines to India, to India, to India, etc., etc. The last Tech I talked with was Anusha (in India...that is all the identifying information one can get) I was upset at the run around I've been getting from Dell, expressed that and she hung up on me. There is no satisfaction to be gained when dealing with Dell!!!!!!! The only logical thing to do is to find an ALTERNATIVE SUPPLIER to DELL!!!!!!

After declining a Windows 10 upgrade ( which I did not initiate my computer was left on), my Dell Inspiron 660 will not boot up instead I get the brief BSOD followed by a request to do a "Repair Startup" which requires the Windows installation disk.

My problem is I did not get one with my system which was bought about 3 years ago. Microsoft will not allow me to download  the software because my system is a pre-load, and Dell won't allow me to download because I am out of warranty. Does anyone how to go about contacting Dell to obtain a System Disk or download.

Thanks for your help.

black screen with underscore

Hello,

I have a dell inspiron 580 Intel ® core ™ i5 CPU 650 3.20 GHz with windows 7 according to the sticker on the computer. I am not computer savvy at all so lay people terms would be greatly appreciated. I have been using google documents to study from and add stuff to for my national exam. Google docs kept freezing on me so I used task manager and ended some tasks hoping that would help it from freezing…it has been freezing for months on any browser I use and it really cuts into my study time so I thought ending tasks may help. After that, I got frustrated with the computer and instead of powering it down, I just turned it off via the power strip switch. The next day when I tried to start it, all I get is a black screen with an underscore. I cannot type in any commands nor do I have any option to start it in safe mode. I only have the options of F2 and F12 when I start the computer or press ctrl+alt+delete. I tried messing around with setting under f2 and f12 but nothing worked. I tried to load default setting from one of those menus but that didn’t work either. I tried pressing F5, F8, F12 at different times repeatedly upon computer startup to try to get an option for safe mode but that didn’t work. Please help me, I really need to get it fixed so I can continue studying. Thanks!

Shall I delete the PBR Image?

My Dell XPS 8500 computer came with windows 8 Dell factory image.  Last week I decided to install a genuine copy of Windows 8.1 which I have download from Microsoft.  Then  I decided to install Dell Backup and Recovery.  Soon after I discovered that my  238GB Samsung SSD hard drive has a partition named PBR Image with a 32.10GB which is almost full.

1) Should I delete this partition?  Do I need it?

2) Is it possible to install Dell Hardware Diagnostic?  It is a useful tool as it lets you check whether your hardware is running properly but obviously it comes on with Dell Factory Image.    Is there a link from where I can download this tool?

Thanks for your hellp in advance.

OS VERSION FOR XPS L412z

In 2012 I bought an XPS L412z notebook from TigerDirect.  Recently for a host of reasons, I needed to wipe my HD clean with Drive Scrubber. I made the mistake of thinking I had the recovery disk, when all I had was the Driver/Utilities disk.  Drive Scrubber did its thing (took three days), then I found out I don't own a Dell Recovery disk.  So I'm the idiot, and I get that.

Can anyone here tell me for certain which version of Windows 7 shipped with this machine?  I'm trying to avoid purchasing an incompatible version.  I know it wasn't Starter & it wasn't Ultimate, so it's either Home Premium or Pro.  I just can't remember which.  And the Dell info that came w/the machine doesn't help.

Your help is appreciated.  And thanks.

Counterfeit or genuine restore media?

$

Four reinstallation media discs were received with the purchase of a used Dell Optiplex 390 computer. All four disc envelopes say they are Made in China and have the same off-white colored windowed envelopes, unlike authentic Made In USA products that have bright white disc envelopes. The markings on and/or in the inner rings around the disc hubs appear to be very unlike those on similar discs of the same age which are known to be authentic. These circumstances raise the question of whether or not these may be counterfeit discs that contain malware and spyware.

Does anyone know whether or not Dell has ever manufactured and distributed authentic restore media with the following descriptions and marked as Made in China?

Does anyone have authentic discs and inner hub ring markings for these titles which can be compared to these suspected counterfeit discs?

Windows updates not installing

Dell Inspiron One 2305

4.00 gb memory - AMD Athlon II x2 250u processor

On 4/13, I downloaded and successfully installed 13 windows security updates. On 4/16, I thought I would run a Disk Cleanup since it had been a while. On 4/17, I received notice that 2 important windows upates (3019978 & 3075220) were ready to download and install. After trying to do the install, they both failed. Many times I tried to no avail. I then thought maybe the disk cleanup removed some file I needed for this process. I then ran a system restore back to 4/13 and prior to the disk cleanup. It took about an hour for that process to complete but it did and now system runs a little slower but it runs. Unfortunately, the system restore did not solve the update install problem. They still fail and I am in a loop now where they keep showing up and asking to be installed before shutdown. I have tried a few fixes on my own: Services -- where you reset the update services process. No deal. Microsoft FixIt tool. No deal. Troubleshoot problems - no deal. Would taking it back to prior 4/13 with system restore do any good? Could some help be offered for this dilemma?? Thank you.

"Operation System not found" error message on Inspiron 7000

Hi, After trying to upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1 on my Inspiron 7000, my Windows install would freeze during the start up process - the Dell logo would appear and the loading icon would stop. I had Linux installed on a separate partition so I went into the BIOS and moved Ubuntu ahead of Windows - this was the mistake. After exiting, I get the error message "Operation System not found". When I start up, I see the options F2 Setup and F12 Boot Options, however I cannot access either - the text will become bolded to show that I have selected it but I always get brought to the same screen which says "Operation System not found". Any ideas on how to proceed? I don't mind losing the files and folders on the device, I just want to be able to use the laptop again. Thanks.
